Hawaiʻi Ponoʻī Coalition is excited to present Ke Kauā o Ka Lāhui: The Life of Prince Jonah Kūhiō Kalaniana‘ole Pi‘ikoi, a powerful living history play that brings to life the legacy of one of Hawai‘i’s most influential leaders. Through the remarkable storytelling of writer Victoria Nalani Kneubuhl and the thoughtful direction of Sammie Choy, this performance weaves together history, culture, and Kūhiō’s lifelong dedication to his people. This theatrical journey connects audiences with Kūhiō’s impact on Hawaiian identity, sovereignty, and leadership. Don’t miss this tribute to a prince who changed Hawai‘i’s future.

In celebration of Queen Liliʻuokalani's 186th birthday, we are holding numerous in-person and virtual events throughout the month of September. Kicking off the month is a concert honoring Queen Liliʻuokalani on Sunday, September 1, 2024 followed by a birthday program in her honor on Monday, September 2, 2024!

Eō E Liliʻu Concert- “Ka Wahine Noho Pono”
Join us for this free event where we invite everyone to sing-a-along as we honor Queen Liliuokalani's legacy. This year the theme of the concert is “Ka Wahine Noho Pono” which will celebrate the wahine in Liliʻu’s life through her compositions!
This event will be LIVE In-person at Kawaiahaʻo Church and will also be livestreamed on Youtube.
Hauʻoli Lā Hānau e Liliʻuokalani
On September 2, the Queen’s birthday, a full day of family-friendly activities will take place to commemorate her life and contributions. The day begins with the Hauʻoli Lā Hānau e Liliʻuokalani Memory Walk from St. Andrews to ʻIolani Palace. The public is invited to enjoy free tours of the palace, Eō E Liliʻu Tributes, a performance of The Queen’s Women play, and a Documentary Short Films Showcase that will delve into various aspects of the Queen’s impact on Hawaiian culture and history.

The recent convening and celebrations of the 13th Festival of Pacific Arts & Culture in Hawaiʻi demonstrate the growing importance of Oceanic nations uniting to shape a future of mutual connection and collaboration.
We invite you to join a two-part civic education discussion- Teaching 1898: America Imperial Legacy in Oceania- bringing together esteemed educators to explore the historical context of America's military and political expansion into Hawaiʻi the Philippines, and island nations across the Pacific.
The panelists, drawing from their diverse backgrounds and professional expertise, will highlight the impacts and legacy of US Imperialism, share how they incorporate this history into their teachings, and express why civic education is crucial to building an informed, empowered, and united society.

Puana--A Conversation about the upcoming Hawaiian-language play exploring Music, Kūpuna, and their Living Legacy
Written and directed by Tammy Hailiʻōpua Baker with Kaipulaumakaniolono Baker, in concert with artistic collaborators R. Keawe Lopes, Jr., Tracie Kaʻōnohiokalani Lopes, Zachary Alakaʻi Lum, and Tawaroa Kawana, the new hana keaka (Hawaiian Theatre) production Puana explores the deep connections that Kānaka Maoli have with their kūpuna (ancestors) through song. Family artifacts reveal stories encapsulated in poetic compositions from the past, which guide contemporary musicians in their artistic journeys.
In this panel discussion, the various production designers will share about their roles in developing this production.

Haʻina ʻia mai ana ka puana… Puana explores the deep connections that Kānaka Maoli have with their kūpuna (ancestors) through song. Family artifacts reveal stories encapsulated in poetic compositions from the past, which guide contemporary musicians in their artistic journeys. This original hana keaka, Hawaiian language theatrical production, is a collaborative endeavor between UHM’s Hawaiian Theatre Program and Ka Waihona A Ke Aloha, a project of Kawaihuelani Center for Hawaiian Language. Puana brings together nationally and internationally renowned artists, professor and playwright/director Tammy Hailiʻōpua Baker, professor, composer and Kumu Hula R. Keawe Lopes, Jr., Kumu Hula Tracie Kaʻōnohilani Lopes, Nā Hōkū Hanohano award-winning musician and composer Zachary Alakaʻi Lum, Māori composer and award-winning recording artist Tawaroa Kawana, moʻolono and playwright Kaipulaumakaniolono Baker.

Hawaiʻi Historic Day Student Documentary Video Showcase
Join us Aliʻiōlani Hale for the culminating program of Hawaiian History Month, a celebration in which we come together in remembrance and reflection, to honor Hawaiʻi's Queen Liliʻuokalani, and the rich cultural heritage of Hawaiʻi. On the last Saturday in September, gather in the Supreme Court to watch six short documentary films produced by student filmmakers for Hawaiʻi History Day -- a state-wide civic education program organized by Hawaiʻi Council for the Humanities. Meleanna Meyer, Hawaiian filmmaker, artist, and education, will moderate a discussion with the student filmmakers as they share their research and reflect on the power of filmmaking for civic advocacy.
